Pool pump repair: problems and troubleshooting

Ned Kampmann

The pool is not only a bowl of water and a large number of different equipment. To provide safe bathing in the pool should be operating normally, filtration system, water heating system, disinfection system, recirculation, etc. An important part of pool equipment are the pumps. They are necessary to ensure constant circulation of the water, for pumping water through filters, for dispensing of chemicals for the operation of the hydromassage system, different rides. When the output of the pump fails, normal operation of the pool becomes impossible. The cost of the new pump is relatively large. Much more profitable is to carry out pool pump repair for swimming pools.

Pool pump problems

Good pool pump requirements

The main requirement for the filtration pumps – long service life without repair. After all, they have to work almost continuously. In addition, the design of the filtration pump has its own characteristics. Their design implies the presence of the filter casings, which remain of major contamination. The fine fraction of suspended solids must pass through pumps for pools without damaging them.

Another requirement for pumps for swimming pools – quiet operation and efficiency. It is unlikely that the visitors will like the pool to swim under the continuous rumble of working of pumping systems. The efficiency of the pump more important to the owner of the pool, because the water filtration must be carried out continuously, which can result in substantial energy bills.

A pool pump consists of an induction motor and, in fact, the pumping unit with an inbuilt filter. In the case of minor loads, the pump housing is made of durable plastic. If the pump is experiencing significant load, its body is made of bronze. Repair of the pumps can refer directly to the “pump” part, so may be limited to the repair of the motor.

The cause of failure

How to repair

Power to the electric motor is supplied, but the impeller is in place

Blocked impeller, shaft oxidation has occurred

When impeller locked by object, it is necessary to extract it.
Oxidation, which occurred during prolonged idle, may trigger locking shaft. The shaft should be rotated by hand, before it is removed the protective casing, or the impeller

electrical network not corresponds to the nameplate parameters

Check the input parameters and the mains connection block terminals

Pump does not turn on and no sounds

There is no voltage supply or violations had occurred in an electrical circuit

Test input voltage, damage to the electric networks

Fuse damaged because the motor was running with overload

Change a damaged fuse and the negative results indicate the damage to the motor windings

The pump during operation emits unusual noise

The air caught in the flow part, which might be due to overload of the motor

Release accumulated air. Install automatic trap air in the upper part of the trim pump

Have any cavitation in the pump, accompanied with vibration

In the suction nozzle pressure must be above the cavitation of the stock pump is not less than 0.5 m. of water.

A “dry run”

The lack of water in the suction pipe

fluid level is below the height of the suction level

Lower the pump or raise the water level.Water from the lower reservoir with a pump can raise to a height of no more than five meters due to the dilution that typically occurs in the impeller

The pump vibrates

Damaged bearing

Change and grease the bearings.

Not fixed pump housing

Attach the pump to the frame or the foundation to secure. This should be strictly implemented installation manual and to comply with the requirements of the project

The pressure or supply of water Below passport numbers

The impeller rotates in the opposite direction

That may occur with pumps with three-phase power – check the wires

External motor protection triggered during start-up

There is a problem in the electrical part

Check in the terminal box all phases.
Check all the fuse contacts.
Check ground wire

Engine protection runs too often

Too high temperature in the room

Temperature should not be above 40°C

Damaged bearings

Change and grease the bearings.

Make sure your return line is open by checking for a valve or there could be a plug in the pool. Run the filter on bypass/recirc. and that will tell you if its a filter problem because it bypasses the filter. You may also have a broken or severely plugged pump impeller and in that case the pump wont move any water (I’m assuming you have water in it so its primed). A bad air leak can also stop a pump from moving water. Hope this helps
