A pool fence is an essential part of any backyard pool. Placed around the perimeter of your pool, the main role of pool fencing is to prevent children from drowning. It is a fact that improper pool fencing is the main factor in cases of children under five years of age drowning. Pool fences are commonly used in countries all-over the world, but remember that fencing legislations differ from country to country.
Laws regarding swimming pool fencing
In countries, where pool fencing is controlled by the law, specific measurements must comply. Please check the relevant legislation in your country.
The basic measurements are:
1. Fence height
2. Height of the gap at the pool fence bottom
3. Width of the gap between fence bars

Pool fence safe zone
As mentioned above, particular values may differ from country to country. The final frontier in keeping your children safe around a backyard pool, even closed by fence, is to provide a safe zone with no climbable objects. The size of a safe zone varies from 90 cm to 1 m.
If your pool fence is equipped with windows or doors, please make sure that they are self-latching and self-closing. Keep an eye on maintaining them in proper conditions to prevent them from corrosion.

DIY Pool fence
The stages in making a DIY pool fence aren’t any different from making any other kind of fence. The steps are simple:
1. Prepare the material
Prepare the material, whether you’ve chosen wooden or aluminum rails and posts.
2. Connect the posts and rails
Follow your project instructions, and connect the posts and rails using nails, screws or even welding if you are intending to have full-metal fencing. Make sure the posts and rails are aligned properly.
3. Install the fence panels
If you are constructing a wooden fence, you need to put in fence panels to provide the necessary level of rigidity.
4. To create a hand-made pool fence use our instructions listed below.
Pool fence installation
What follows is a to-do list for installing an aluminum pool fence
1. Make a string line using a hammer and nails.
This should be used in order to mark out where the fence will be installed. Place nails between floor boards, and create string lines between nails.
2. Measure the length of the fence panels
To make sure the fence panels perfectly fit where you want to install them, it is advisable to measure the length of the fence panels. Mark out the points where the one panel should end and the next should begin.
3. Set the posts
Set the posts using screws and a drill, making sure they are positioned along the string line.
4. Put the fence on wooden blocks
Just to make sure it is of the correct height.
5. Attach the fence to the posts
Put the fence together using screws, both along the top and bottom rails.
6. Attach the hinges for the gate
At the top and bottom of the gate.
7. Repeat steps 1-4 to install the fence around the other side
8. Attach the catch and lock for the gate
Make sure the gate closes smoothly, tightening the hinges if necessary.
Pool fence ideas of design
Pool fencing can and , in my view, should be an element of your backyard design. If you pre-plan, try to divide your backyard into zones, for example a relaxation zone and a children’s playground, by using a pool fence.
